Christopher M. Stafford Wins Sigma Xi Award
NCMC Project Leader, Christopher M. Stafford, was awarded the 2005-2006 NIST Chapter of Sigma Xi Young Scientist Award for Excellence in Scientific Research on May 23, 2006. The Award was given in recognition of Chris' "pioneering work in developing a new method for measuring the mechanical modulus of ultrathin materials" for NIST's Polymers Division. The Award was presented during the Chapter's Annual Awards Banquet, held at at O'Donnell's Seafood Restaurant in Gaithersburg, Maryland. Dr. Marilyn E. Jacox, Chair of the NIST Chapter of Sigma Xi Awards Committee, introduced Chris and his work to the audience, and together with Ms. Magdalena Navarro, President of the NIST Chapter of Sigma Xi, formally recognized Chris' accomplishments by presenting him with a framed Award Certificate.
Chris joined NIST in the Fall of 2001, and is currently leading NCMC's project on the Mechanics of Complex Interfaces. As part of this project, Chris has produced noteworthy research in the development and application of high-throughput measurements of the mechanical properties of polymers through a buckling-based metrology.
Sigma Xi, the society for scientific research, has conducted new initiatives, activities, and programs in the areas of education, international cooperation, and research ethics for more than a century. More information is available at http://www.sigmaxi.org.
